  1. The kingdom of Hungary was conquered by the Turks in the early sixteenth
  2. century. Then in the seventeenth century Hungary became part of the Habsburg
  3. Empire, and in 1867 together with Austria it was reconstituted as a dual
  4. monarchy. In 1918 Hungary was declared a republic but in 1920 the monarchy
  5. was restored. After the Second World War the Communists seized power and
  6. slowly took control of government.  In 1956 Soviet troops put down an anti
  7. Communist uprising. In 1989 there began an irresistible movement towards
  8. democratic rule which culminated in multiparty elections in 1990. Roman
  9. Catholicism is the principal religion, although there are many Calvinists;
